december 9th holiday trunk show

Just a reminder of the annual holiday trunk show at Susy Pilgrim Waters' home. Many spirited and talented gals will be showing their wares and we'll have a little something something from the shop. It's always a fun night. Come by if you can.
December 9th, 5:30-8:30pm.

we're not opening at 4am but...

Tuesday, November 17, 2009

wow, look what we got into

"an encapsulated view of the most interesting, inspired, and authentic locally owned eating and shopping establishments in Boston, Massachusetts" Whoa, we're so honored to be added to the recent edition of eat. shop boston which just came out. We're in some pretty fantastic company and you can find copies in the shop along with other eat.shop guides including London, Vancover, SF Bay, Chicago, and New England (new to the eat.shop family). The guide offers a great local challenge too. Visit three of the businesses featured in this issue within a month and spend a min. of $25.00 at each. Send eat.shop a copy of the receipts with dates and amounts spent, and they will send a free copy of any of their eat.shop cities--your choice. Get eating! Get shopping!

featherweight

Look what floated into the shop today! Feathery, lightweight cashmere scarves in bold colors to help get you through the gray days of Winter. Are there such creatures as cashmere sheets, or is that just over the top? Enjoy your weekend and don't forget to visit us in Florence, MA if you're out that way.

jocelyn webb pedersen

We're so happy to hang a lovely group of paintings by Jocelyn Webb Pederson. Other than being a busy mom and just a dazzling spirit, Joce is an artist and fine press printer. Can we brag for a second? Her work is found in the collections of the New York Public Library, The Getty Special Collections and Yale-just to name a few. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two boys. The work here at the shop are tiny 4x4 paintings of enamel, acrylic, graphite and ink. They are organic and playful and we couldn't be prouder to hang them. Each is $45.00 so if you're just starting your very own original art collection, this is a great and accessible way to add to it.

back in florence

It's that time again. Michael Russem over at Kat Ran Press has invited us to set up shop during Open Studios at the Arts and Industry Building in Florence, MA. We had a great time last year and really enjoyed exploring and meeting some darn talented artists. We hope that if you find yourselves out in Western Mass this coming weekend, you'll stop by and say hello.

tulip wants sherpa too

We had a lot of fun today shooting our little friend Petra while she modeled the latest arrival from Periwinkle Bloom. Besides being uber cute, she was a super good sport with all our primping and fluffing. Even when Tulip wanted in on the action. Thanks Jaime!

stripey sock mash-up

You asked. We listened. Back in the shop--Mia Zia striped socks! We opened the parcel yesterday and KABAMMMMM!--a riot of color (diane was temporarily blinded). Trouser length, over the knee-ers and now, Mia Zia for men. Why should the dudes be left out of the fun? Shawls and hats of equal wow-dom accompanied, but you'll have to stop by and see those for yourself.

quickest show ever

A very impromptu show is hanging only for a few days here. If you didn't get a chance to see Susy Pilgrim Waters' Orange show in Wellfleet last month, here is your chance. We've hung a selected grouping of her smaller paintings. If you're a fan, we think you'll really love this collection.

stamps

What a find! The other day, a friend received a parcel in the mail. It was an amazing grouping of stamps--a gift from the collection of Lili Wronker. We started to pour through them when we came upon this tiny glasine envelope. Inside we found the stamps you see here plus a few more. Whoa....so lovely. Pristine condition 1963 Japanese stamps. Check out this color palette and illustration. Still trying to research more about these. If you have any info, please pass it on to us.

more treats from the highline

So we're strolling down the Highline, and it's a nice stroll let us tell ya. We can see mucho vending opportunities and since it's a sunny, warm, early Fall day, we're getting a bit parched. We see the sandwich cart run by the Craft empire, but quickly hone in on the delectable cupcakes on the Butter Lane cart next-door. As the Winter chill sets in, these little kiosks will hibernate so if you're a cupcake fan, not snob, scoot yourself down to the Highline for these tasty morsels. We chose simply, vanilla with vanilla and paired it with a refreshing cup of lemonade. Derlish.

a beautiful stroll on the highline

Whilst in NYC earlier this week, we had the opportunity to visit the recently opened Highline. It was an amazingly sunny day-so bright that our little i-phone couldn't get you adequate pics, but please see and learn more here about this tremendous endeavor. Originally built in the 1930's, the Highline was an elevated rail line. Defunct by 1980, it has now been turned into a public park ('park' doesn't really do it justice) stretching from Ganesvoort Street up to 20th for now--34th street is the goal. If you have the chance, please, please go. It's a new and wonderful view of the city.

cozy coats and happy balm

Look what found their way into the shop this week. Utility Canvas' new 'storm' coat. Cozy, quilted goodness with snaps, belt, and hood. It falls roughly at the knee and we've got them in teal, red and charcoal.  And, while donning your new outerware, don't forget to glimmerize your lips with our happy balm. If this little tin of gooey fruitiness doesn't make you smile, well, we just don't know what we can do for you. Come visit. We'll be snapping and puckering away.

root veggies already?

We hate to admit it, but today, officially, our stomachs desired comfort food. Maybe it's the slightest change in temp that we've been experiencing over the past few days. Maybe it's just the fading of a tan. Regardless, out came the potatoes, onions, garlic, and rosemary. We're starting to pour through a new book we have at the shop--easy one pot. Outstanding photography aside, the recipes look fairly uncomplicated and the ingredients are surprisingly accessible. Tonight it looks like something called 'smoky hotpot' is our target.

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

orange

If you find yourselves in Wellfleet, Ma this Saturday, please pop on over to Farm Gallery. Our friend Susy Pilgrim Waters' new show Orange (her favorite color by the way) will be humming.
The show will run through the month of September, but the opening reception will be the 12th from 6-8pm. We can't wait to see her new work!

nokori cotton towels

Well so far, September couldn't be more glorious. We're excited that new, yummy goods are starting to trickle in, beginning with these beautiful nokori dyed cotton towels. So, so soft.
Hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day weekend. Please keep in mind that the shop will be closed both Sunday and Monday.

planning, conspiring, submerging ourselves in water

We're taking a little break from this blog land. The shop is still open--see hours along the side here--and our Summer sale stills moves on. Come by and see what's left and please do feel compelled to clean us out. It's time for travel, trade shows, cavorting with co-conspirators, formulating the potion that will be our Fall/Holiday collection, and of course, getting a swim in whenever we can. Summer finally came to New England folks and we couldn't be happier.
Hope you're swimming too.

back in stock

Ahhhhh, so nice to have the Santa Maria Novella potpourri back in stock. Now each bag is sealed in Florence to assure perfect freshness and a longer lasting scent. For you who are un-familiar with this magical fragrance, it's a heavenly, full-bodied blend of herbs and flowers all grown without pesticides in the Florentine Hills. The formula is secret, but once you take a little sniff, you won't ask, you'll just accept.

periwinkle bloom

So, so delighted to get this little parcel today-a lovely assortment of baby/toddler togs from periwinkle bloom. Really, it's ridiculous how amazing the textile and craftmanship is on these little dresses and tunics. We're talking organic cotton in jersey and flannel and linens, both of the new and reclaimed vintage variety. We wish they came in big girl sizes. Sigh...

We were terribly excited when our lovely UPS man, Stewart, arrived yesterday. He delivered our new show of encaustics by Hadley Hutton. We've shown Hadley's work before and by popular demand, here she is once again. We think that you'll enjoy this crop folks. More of Hadley's trademark rich color blended with mesmerizing natural and geometric motifs. Come and see for yourself.

roof-top food supply

We like food here--a lot. Especially when it's local and fresh. Living in New England makes that a difficult feat at times, but when the warmer months arrive, we gobble all we can. We caught this article in today's New York Times. We like what these folks are doing.

Monday, June 15, 2009

more arriving this week

We recently received a bit of editorial on some soaps we carry by Saipua-that sweet little flower shop and soap house in Redhook. It seems like Saltwater soap is a winner folks and we are completely sold out, but more will arrive either this Wednesday or Thursday. If you'd like us to place a bar or two aside for you, just email us at info@shop-pod.com and we'll be happy to do so.

purple globes in the public garden

A few weeks ago on one of our late night bike rides through the city, we passed through the Boston Public Gardens. We spied this grove of allium-young, tall stems, and just forming their flower buds. Today, day off and 80 degrees later, we passed through again. Here ya go. Beautiful purple globes and a lot of 'em. We love that the gardeners here are including this wonderful specimen. It's perfectly perfect and we look forward to it every Spring. Go visit swiftly.

when in L.A.

Last weekend, we had the opportunity to take a trip to that dazzling little city Los Angeles. In between oggling the amazing flora, blowing bubbles with friends, or wolfing down fish tacos, we paid a visit to Paula Smail's shop Henry Road. For this native South African, the shop provides an perfect venue to showcase her textile designs, the products made of them, original artwork, and a nice collection of carefully chosen flea market finds. We know that we've gushed over Henry Road textiles before, but we wanted to share a few snaps of the shop cuz it's so darn great. Visit if you can.

susy pilgrim waters: limited edition leather bags

Susy never ceases to amaze us. For a while now we've been hearing bits and pieces about a new project she's been working on. Well, today she shows up with these stunning leather bags. Some are suede, some are buttery smooth, and all, are one of a kind and numbered to prove so. You'll also find an interior pocket for cell phones or nick nacks and a useful key chain fob. We love how each is tagged with a silver or bronze charm stamped with Susy's iconic bunny. Beautful, fun, and thoughtfully designed. We're excited to show them off. Thanks Susy!

Remember that song? Well, that's how we feel whenever we glimpse o'er at the new tablecloths by Paula Smail at Henry Road. We also received cozy cushions in the same sunny design. More details here and here.

mollie's chocolate bread

A very nice day trip out to Northampton was made this past Sunday. Despite the task at hand: to prepare the printing studio for new window construction, we got the chance to cruise around town and say hi to friends. One such stop included a visit to see Mollie over at Hungry Ghost Bread to order up some of her special chocolate bread for a gift and a loaf for ourselves, of course. So French batard with heaps of gooey bittersweet chocolate inside. Doesn't get better than that. Be sure to visit if you're in the neighborhood. Oh, and try the pear/chevre turnovers if they have them-yummmm. Thanks Mol.

garden anywhere

A freind was lamenting her current gardening situation at her new home. Great apartment, great neighborhood, great light, but, an asphalt paved backyard. Yikes. This would be super if she rollerskated, but, alas, not her gig. So, we hooked her up with a book we've been selling in the shop, Garden Anywhere by Alys Fowler. It's a very useful, indie-type primer to gardening in all sorts of spots with lots of gardening resources and good tips on safe and responsible dumpster diving. Well, low and behold, we just got a few snaps of her project in the works and here they are. Seems she scoured the local wine marts for some free wooden boxes. Wicker furniture was plucked from her neighbors' garbage pile--just got a fresh coat of Krylon. She sewed up a couple of cushions (oh to be so talented) for added lounging comfort, added nurturing soil to the boxes, hit her local nursery and is off and planting. Hey, thanks for sharing these pics and with all that basil going on, we hope to get a taste of yummy pesto soon.

Another snowy day. Crisp air, sun, fluffly-easy to shovel precipitation. It's lovely yes, but oh man, we saw these locally grown tulips at the flower exchange and almost did a back-handspring.
Tulip season at the market is starting and our favourite supplier grows their own right here in Massachusetts. You'll see these lovlies now through the end of Spring at the shop, for sale-on fresh cut Friday's.

mollie zanoni & ariel kotker

Another nice surprise while in Western Mass was the chance to attend the opening of a wonderful new sculpture exhibit at the Northampton Center for the Arts by Mollie Zanoni and Ariel Kotker, both mixed media artists. Anyone sensitive to the nature of craft will really enjoy the obvious love these two women have for intense hand-work--and we mean intense.
Mollie has brought together a family of fantastical creatures, not quite human and not quite animal. They are sweet, sad, distorted, absurd, comic and hugely emotive. They bear immense personality and while engaging, it almost seems that they'd turn to you and engage right back. We imagine that at night when the gallery is closed, they huddle to tell each other their stories.

On the topic of story telling, is Ariel's work in progress: His Room As He Left It. Her installation is a novel in 3-D and tells the story of a young man named Drey from the imaginary Sparkletown, PA. Though only partially complete, her finished piece will be a roomful of sculptures, each a personal artifact belonging to Drey, and arranged as it was the day he departed upon his journey beyond Sparkletown. Every item has been hand-made or is in the process of being hand-made by Ariel. We're talking everything people, ev-er-y-thing. Personal faves: old toy car, wisdom teeth and soda bottle cap. Check out her site for more.

charlotte sullivan

Well, just getting a chance to catch our breath and sit down to post. The weekend out in Florence, MA participating in the annual open studios event was a huge success. Thank you to all who were so very gracious and welcoming. So many creative minds and talented artists in this creaky and lovely industrial building. We were particularly excited to discover the artwork of Charlotte Sullivan-a newbie here-seriously, she moved in maybe three days prior. Not new, however, to producing thought provoking, exercise your mind in a different kind of way, design experiments. Be sure to investigate her site.

lindsay bentis-encaustics

We're thrilled to be exhibiting new work by Lindsay Bentis. The collection of encaustic paintings, true to Lindsay's technical style, explore layered color, texture, line and all forms organic. If we can get away from traditional art-speak for a moment though, her images are dreamy, fluid and simply comforting. We think you'll agree. Through November 30th.
Reception: Wednesday November 19th, 6-8pm.

collecting stamps

Recently, our friend Michael Russem over at Kat Ran Press announced that he was going public with his stamp collection. Now, one might say, 'big deal just another stamp collection' or 'super nerdy', but just cool it.. This one, and for all of you 'design heads' out there, is pretty neat and interesting. His collection, which you can see here, is based on stamps designed by type designers. Now, most of us, when we engage with letters on our computer, at some time, choose a type (font if you will). The type might say a little about the nature of the words or it may say a little about the writer. We at Pod, well, we're all about the Bembo. So check this site out. Not only is it a beautiful and comprehensive collection, but it's an interesting look at how designers actually design and the problem solving that goes into that.

thomas paul fall collection

We're always excited when a new collection of Thomas Paul cushions arrive. This season brings yet another round of evocative botanical designs in warm hues of plum, aqua, chocoalte and moss green-yum! Each cushion is 100% woven linen, hand silk-screened and filled with a feather down stuffer.

liriodendron tulipifera

Couldn't resist getting a pic in of the beautiful tuliptree leaves found on the ground this morning.
The fruit is adorning our broken bike bell perfectly.

lauren denitzio-illustrations

If you're in the neighborhood, do make sure you make some time to check out a new exhibit here at the shop--illustrations by Brooklyn based artist/graphic designer Lauren Denitzio. A combination of pen, watercolor ink and acrylic on dictionary pages, her work is bold, emotive and illustrative. A young artist to keep an eye on and to start collecting. Now through the end of October.
Clockwise: Profile, Tim, Green Cardinal, Worried. Additional pieces in our shop.

chilly weather, warm light

So we sell a lot of Chinese lanterns. Some are old, some are new and fashioned on
ages ago styles, but most, get hung in the Summer. In gardens, on porches, whatever.
Well, in New England these days, it's getting chillier. We don't know about you, but we never like to banish our Chinese lanterns for warmer temps. This is what we do. Maybe you do too, but if you don't, you might want to consider this an option. White Christmas lights, fairy lights if you prefer. At the shop, we just wind these low voltage sparklers 'round the guts of the lamp, run the cord out the bottom and voila! you've got yourself a touch of warming glow for any darkening spot in your home. Believe us, it's softening, it adds light and it will make the Winter months oh, so more pleasing.

birthday open house-october 18th

Agggggh! It's true. Pod is ten years old. A decade ago this September we opened in a tiny, oh so tiny storefront in Brookline Village. The brother, the sister-in law, the nephews, the friends—oh the patient friends—all came and helped demo, paint, sweep, clean and build fixtures. We crossed our fingers, breaths were held and we hoped to last a year. And then the people came. They scratched their heads, peeked in and dared to climb the three steps up and through the entrance. Comments ranged from 'What are you doing?', 'Who are you and where's your CV to qualify you as an arbiter of thoughtful design?' to 'Do you have a trust-fund?'(seriously, that was asked). Gulp . . . we just wanted to offer up a life-style idea, timeless home furnishing and an inspiring atmosphere. The good news is that those same people took a chance on us. They liked what Pod had to say. They told their friends, supported our vision, bought wedding gifts, birthday gifts or just came by to chat about music or the latest political debacle.

So that brings us to 2008 and a 10th anniversary to celebrate. Historically, we're known for being terrible at self-promotion, but we're here to tell you that Pod is getting its birthday on and inviting you all to come. You, dear customer, are half of the reason we've made it thus far so please do come and have a little bubbly with us. It's sure to be a really fun day. Other than light snacks and bevs, we'll be exhibiting new work by the illustrator Lauren Denitzio. Book/paper artist Angela Liguori will be showing her lovely Italian ribbons along with Eva Sklaver who will be offering up her latest jewelry creations.

Hope to see you. The details are above.

So Spring brought you lovely painted clogs. Summer had your toes tapping in shimmery silver clogs and now the Fall.
Check 'em out. Metallic bronze leather-only the way Swedes can do it-comfy, classic wooden footbed and non-skid soles so they don't get away from you. We've got them in European sizes 36-41 and they're ninety bucks per pair.

pod blogs. why?

Let's see...Pod turns ten, well, today. We've been a tiny shop, a larger shop and now, a tiny shop once again. We've reconfigured our storefront in Brookline Village, MA along with some identity materials and this includes our website http://www.shop-pod.com/. The site is not quite complete so in the meantime we thought it wise to set up a blog to keep you all informed via words and pics. It might not be all business since blogs inherently lend themsleves to a bit of self-indulgence, but hey (insert cliche of choice).
Most importantly, we want to get information out to you on our products, on inspirations, on music, a cool movie, good textile, a promising artist and tasty foods. We all love food here-really love food, so don't be surprised if a couple of posts just rant on about gourmet snacks at any one of our favorite haunts.
Well, that's our first post. If you live nearby, be sure to stop in and say hello and check out the new space. And to all of you professional bloggers out there, kudos. Don't now how you do it, day in, day out. Keep up the good work!
